Dispatch
by Alice DiMicele

I work the night shift I dispatch emergencies
Old man’s life alert sent a signal so I sent out the police
He said I don’t need your help and I’d like for you to leave
They stood outside his door yelling open up so they could see

He said, “I don’t need you, I don’t want you I pushed the button by mistake
This is my home this is my house won’t you please just go away”

And so he called me back and said these cops outside they want me dead
I radioed for them to back off but they broke down his door instead

And I don’t know how to say what happened next
First a taser than the beanbags in a live rounds in the chest
And the officer yelling N-word Yes this is what I heard
That a black man is unsafe in his own house Is so absurd

and He said, “I don’t need you, I don’t want you I pushed the button by mistake
This is my home this is my house won’t you please just go away”

Kenneth Chamberlain was a 68 year old retired Marine He Worked 20 years in corrections and he raised a family
It makes no sense but he was murdered right there in his home
and the cops can lie all they want but I heard it all on the phone
I heard every N-word, I heard it on the phone
I heard every word, I heard it all on the phone

He said, “I don’t need you I don’t want you I pushed the button by mistake
This is my home this is my house won’t you please just go away”
